HUDDERSFIELD people are being encouraged to get their mouths checked for free.

The move is part of a campaign to raise awareness of oral cancer.

Screening sessions are being held at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary this week to mark Mouth Cancer Awareness Week.

The campaign comes after recent figures showed that oral cancer killed one person every five hours in the UK.

The disease can affect the mouth, tongue, lips and throat.

Smoking, drinking and a poor diet are among the major risk factors.

Symptoms can include an ulcer that does not heal or red or white patches in the mouth.

Mary Augustine, manager of the Oral Surgery and Maxillofacial Unit at the Infirmary, said cases were rising.

She added: "If we make only one person walk away with a better understanding of oral cancer, the project will have been a success."

She said early detection was the key to beating the disease, which could increase chances of survival from 50% to 90%.

People can be screened for free at HRI between 9.30am and 11.30am tomorrow.

Screenings are also being held at the Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax, on Thursday, from 1pm to 3pm.

People do not need to book an appointment.
