CAR parking charges across Calderdale could be altered to bring them into line with each other.

Eight different systems are in operation at council-owned car parks in the district's towns.

Now a move is being made to standardise the charges.

Car parks manager Martin Hibbins said: "It would be much simpler for the public."

He spoke as it was revealed that new charges in Brighouse and Elland have netted £24,296 in just four months.

Pay-and-display machines were installed for the first time at eight car parks in the two towns.

They went into operation despite protests by traders and residents.

But Mr Hibbins said their introduction had gone smoothly.

"The new charges were received very quietly, with remarkably little comment from the general public.

"Other than a few specific details - such as parking arrangements for a day nursery in Elland - the new charges have operated smoothly from day one," he said.

Few reports had been received of problems caused by drivers parking on the road to avoid the charges, said Mr Hibbins.

He revealed that just over 1,000 people had been handed penalty tickets for failure to pay the correct charges.

The figure was similar to that at other car parks, he said.
