A LONG-AWAITED decision is to be taken on whether to go ahead with a green trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

The £1.1m Fenay Greenway project is to be considered by top Kirklees councillors this month.

Plans to create the route - running between Kirkheaton and Kirkburton - have become bogged down in controversy.

Many people living along the proposed greenway oppose it.

But the council says 70% of the people it consulted are in favour.

Council Cabinet members will decide at a meeting starting at 4pm at Huddersfield Town Hall on April 20.

Clr Ann Denham, Cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "The Fenay Greenway offers an opportunity to provide the local communities between Kirkheaton and Kirkburton with a traffic-free path, in an attractive environment that could be used for leisure and transport to and from work, schools and shops.

"The council is aware that some local residents have concerns about the project.

"I would encourage anyone - either in favour or against the greenway - to take the opportunity to express their views at the Cabinet meeting."

The plan is to use the route of an old branch railway line, which closed in the 1960s.

The 2.6-mile route runs between School Lane, Kirkheaton, and Penistone Road, Kirkburton.

If the project is approved, a planning application could be submitted and discussions with the various landowners could start.

The first phase could start this year, but it could take six years to complete the scheme.
