A HUDDERSFIELD Muslim group is holding courses to educate police and community workers about Islam.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, based in Lower Fitzwilliam Street, is teaching police officers, councillors and council staff about Islam, in a bid to dispel myths about the religion.

Instructor Mr B A Mahmood (left) is pictured with some of the people who attended one of the workshops.

A basic training session has been held for Kirklees neighbourhood wardens and sessions for police and councillors are due to take place soon.

The wardens' session was led by the group's youth leader, Yusaf Aftab.

Farooq Aftab, spokesman for the group, said: "We gave them an elementary study of Islam, what it means and contemporary issues, such as jihad (holy war), women and Islam and suicide bombings.

"The idea is to dispel myths about these things and give people the real facts to help build a harmonious and peaceful community."

Mr Aftab said further sessions would be held regularly to build on the elementary sessions.
