OLYMPIC gold medal rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave is urging Huddersfield's couch potatoes to get fit.

The Stadium Health and Fitness Club, at the Alfred McAlpine Stadium, is taking part in Commit to Get Fit, a nat- ional campaign, which aims to get 100,000 inactive people out of their armchairs and exercising regularly.

Diabetes sufferer Sir Steve, who won a record- breaking five Olympic golds, said: "As someone who has diabetes, I know that physical activity can help with diabetes control.

"In some cases taking exercise can also prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes from developing.

"Commit to Get Fit is a great way of encouraging us all to get fit and feel healthy."

At the Stadium Health and Fitness Club, people can take part in a free walking fitness assessment at any time until Thursday. Participants walk at their own pace for a mile and then instructors can build a fitness routine by measuring the pulse rate.

Fitness services manager at the stadium, Jamie Lyne, said the test was very simple.

"The test provides a result whatever pace people walk, so it is ideal for those new to exercise or those who haven't been physically active for some time," he said.

The Government- backed campaign is now in its 13th year.
