HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman was pipped at the post in the annual charity champion awards.

He was one of four nominations for the title of education and sport champion.

But it was Lord Coe who got the honour, to mark landing London the 2012 Olympic Games.

Mr Sheerman's name was put forward by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce.

It said he was tireless in helping charities and gave not-for-profit organisations a voice in the House of Commons.

The other nominees were MPs David Anderson and Jacqui Smith.
