HUDDERSFIELD firms were today urged to back a national scheme to take on young apprentices.

The call came from the town’s MP, who said the project meant a “win, win” situation for employers and young jobless people.

The Government-backed scheme aims to get 5,000 new apprentices aged between 16 and 18 into work in the manufacturing industries.

But Mr Sheerman said: “So far, only about 1,800 places have been taken and I would love to see some of the others go to people in Huddersfield.

“I am sure there are small firms in our town who would welcome the chance to take on new apprentices and get some of the costs covered.

“Only about 10% of the working population in Huddersfield is now involved directly in manufacturing and it would be a bonus to get that number increased.

“It’s a ‘win, win’ situation for both the local firms, who get money to take on staff, and for the young people”.

The MP urged employers to contact his offices to find out more details.
