POLITICIANS were meeting today to discuss regeneration in North Kirklees.

Dewsbury Labour MP Shahid Malik and Kirklees Council leader Clr Robert Light (Conservative) were involved in a sharp exchange about the future of the town last month.

Mr Malik accused the council of “shameful neglect” of his constituency after Marks & Spencer announced it was leaving the town after 100 years.

Clr Light replied that the MP’s criticism was “deliberately inaccurate”.

But today the pair will meet to discuss Dewsbury Forward, a new group which will work to attract investment to the town.

The group will be officially launched in the autumn to act as a strategic partnership between Kirklees Council, regional development agencies, local businesses, the voluntary sector and the public.

Mr Malik believes Dewsbury Forward will play a valuable role.

He said: “It will take on the challenging task of providing local strategic leadership which will help ensure effective regeneration.”

The MP was also meeting Kirklees Council chief executive Rob Vincent and regeneration director Ken Gillespie.
