MP KALI Mountford is opposing plans to shift maternity services to Halifax.

The Colne Valley MP is calling on the town to unite to save hospital services after radical plans unveiled by health chiefs last month.

The move, if agreed, would leave Huddersfield with a midwife-led only unit.

Women needing consultant care - including Caesarean sections and even epidurals - would be transferred to Calderdale Royal Hospital for delivery.

The MP appealed for people to put aside political differences.

She said: "I think regardless of political opinions we should join forces in opposing these parts of the proposals. We need to stay focused on the best interests of local mums and mums-to-be and their babies rather than trying to outdo each other with a political agenda.

"It seems clear that midwives are excellent and well able to give mothers and their babies a comprehensive and caring service.

"But if things go unexpectedly wrong during a birth, it makes sense that full clinical support, including an obstetrician, paediatrician and anaesthetist, is on hand."

She said she had made alternative suggestions to the hospital trust, including developing the Acre Mills site for midwifery services. The trust bought the Lindley site opposite Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for administration.

Ms Mountford added: "We all want to see fewer Caesarean sections, less reliance on drugs and more natural births.

"But this must be done secure in the knowledge that a full range of clinical support is available quickly should the need arise."
