HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman was entertained by children reciting animal rhymes when he visited Ashbrow Infant and Nursery School.

Mr Sheerman visited the school yesterday as part of his duties as chairman of the Commons Education Select Committee.

He saw children raising charity money by reciting the rhymes as part of the school's Chatterbox Challenge.

The children were sponsored to recite their rhymes, All the cash raised was given to I Can, a charity which helps schools to support children with speech and language difficulties.

Dora Plant, the head of the Sheepridge school, said: "We have quite a number of children who struggle with communication, so it was a meaningful event for us. It was using little voices to make a big difference."

Mr Sheerman was also shown how staff bring books to life for the pupils by using puppets, rhymes and re-enacting the stories.

He then met staff before sitting down to eat a school lunch with a group of pupils.

Mrs Plant added: "He served up the food and talked to the children."

After spending the morning at Ashbrow Mr Sheerman visited Bradley Junior School.
