HEADTEACHERS and governors from across North Kirklees met with MP Shahid Malik to discuss the ongoing shake-up.

Mr Malik was joined by Kirklees cabinet members for education Clr Ken Smith and John Smithson.

New Building Schools for the Future proposals are set to be published on March 5 before a further consultation period.

Mr Malik said: “We cannot afford to lose focus or trust that all will be well simply because there is a new Labour-led administration.

“In short, we cannot take any chances with the future of our children. The need for a new sixth form college in Dewsbury is vital and this is something we must secure.

“We will continue to challenge the original Conservative proposals and we will fight to prevent the proposed closure of the excellent St John Fisher sixth form centre, fight to halt the massive expansion that is envisaged on the Westborough site which would blight the lives of local people living there and fight to keep Castle Hall and Thornhill open.”

Since the original plans were announced last September Mr Malik has held 12 meetings with local heads and submitted a 44-page joint report to Kirklees in December.
