A LOCAL MP has urged people to make the most of their remaining post offices - or risk losing them.

Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford was speaking after Monday's announcement that, despite public opposition, nine post offices in Huddersfield are to be axed next month as part of a cost-cutting campaign.

Many others in this area were shut last year as part of a huge shake-up by Royal Mail.

Ms Mountford said: "In some instances the public have put up a good cause for keeping a post office open - and have not been listened to.

"All that is left is for me to urge local people to make as much use of their local post office as possible.

"Use it or lose it," she added.

A decision has still to be made on the fate of a 10th threatened post office, on Leeds Road, opposite the McAlpine Stadium.

A spokesman for the Post Office's regional head office confirmed that - for the time being - there will not be any further closures in Huddersfield.

"The exercise will not be revisiting Huddersfield in the immediate future," he said.
