A LOCAL MP has welcomed moves by councils to back the country’s armed forces.

Jason McCartney (Colne Valley) was at Westminster for an event promoting Community Covenants, organised by the Royal British Legion.

Kirklees Council is one of 50 which have signed up for the covenants, committing them to supporting servicemen and their families.

Mr McCartney, a former RAF officer, said: “I was pleased to show my support for the Royal British Legion and to back its call for local communities to strengthen ties with the armed forces in their own area.

“Now all of us need to ensure the commitments made really make a difference where it matters – on the ground”.
