A LOCAL MP who served as a founding member of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland as part of the Good Friday Agreement has condemned the weekend murders.
Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik spoke of his horror following the killing of two soldiers at the army base in Antrim.
Mr Malik, now Justice Minister, served as an Equality Commissioner from 1999 to 2002.
He said that he was completely shocked by the cowardly murders and that he was sure all people, regardless of religion or background, would be appalled by the attacks.
Mr Malik said: “Progress has been almost unimaginably positive over the last decade since the Good Friday Agreement and I’m sure that the overwhelming majority of people in Northern Ireland would not want to go back to those dark, dim and depressing days.
“It is important we remain vigilant but I do not believe we should become overly alarmed.
“That is the objective of these cowardly terrorists.”
