ANGRY MP Barry Sheerman is to seek a meeting with Kirklees Council over contracts with recycling company Sita.

The Huddersfield MP is furious that the waste company is to axe 22 jobs in the town – and transfer thousands of tonnes of waste to the north east.

Sita Kirklees plans to scale back operations at its Hillhouse recycling plant and transfer waste from Kirklees homes to a plant in Northumberland.

But Mr Sheerman said it was a “ludicrous” decision and plans to ask the council to look at its contract with Sita.

“As an environmentalist, I fail to understand how shipping waste more than 100 miles can be good for anyone.

“If the facilities in Huddersfield are not up to standard then they should be improved and we must end this practice of transferring waste around the country.

“We need to look very closely at the contract Sita has with Kirklees Council and see what can be done to stop this movement of waste, which makes no sense either environmentally or socially”.

Sita says the 22 jobs will go from the 51 employed at Hillhouse as the plant is making a loss. The move will see 19,000 tonnes of waste taken by road to Northumberland each year.
