HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman has welcomed new powers for West Yorkshire Police to trap uninsured drivers.

He applauded the police for using automatic number plate recognition cameras to spot and ultimately seize cars being driven without insurance.

The cameras link to a database of all vehicles registered in the UK.

Mr Sheerman said: "I'm very pleased that police in Huddersfield will have these new powers to crack down on the problem of uninsured drivers.

"Driving without insurance is not a victimless crime. The resulting costs and damage are passed to the honest motorist. It is estimated that every law-abiding motorist in West Yorkshire pays an extra £30 a year because of uninsured drivers.

"On top of these powers we are creating a new offence of keeping a vehicle without insurance, so drivers of uninsured cars don't even need to be on the road to be caught.

"We are on the side of honest, hard-working people and we will not tolerate those people who choose to flout the law."

The camera operation inv- olves West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and West Midlands police.
