MP Barry Sheerman has given money to two Huddersfield charities raised from money saved by not sending Christmas cards.

The Huddersfield MP instead emailed electronic greeting cards to friends and colleagues.

He gave the savings to Kirkwood Hospice and the Forget-Me-Not Trust, a charity which raises money to build a children's respite centre and hospice in Sheepridge.

He is pictured presenting a cheque to Kirkwood finance director Hilary Turner and marketing manager Garry Wilkinson.

Mr Sheerman visited both charities to hand over the money.

He said: "Rather than spending money on a large number of Christmas cards I decided that sending out an e-card would be a more environmentally friendly way to wish people a Happy Christmas.

"The money I have saved is being donated to two charities that continue to do great work for the local community.

"In 2007 I will continue to campaign for small steps that individuals can take in their lives to benefit not only the environment but also contribute to good causes."
