MPs have backed a fight for survival by the Duke of Wellington's regiment.

Huddersfield Labour MP Barry Sheerman is just one of more than 30 MPs who have signed an Early Day Motion to put pressure on Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon not to merge the Dukes with the two other Yorkshire regiments.

Other signatures on the early day motion, put forward by Calder Valley MP Chris McCafferty, include former Tory leader William Hague, Wakefield MP David Hinchliffe and Keighley's Ann Cryer.

Tomorrow, Colonel of the Regiment Maj Gen Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter will address crowds in Halifax town centre who will have gathered to show their support for the 302-year-old regiment.

Mayor of Kirklees Mary Harkin, believes the Government will listen if people come out in force to show their support for the Dukes.

"I am hoping all the support the regiment is getting from the public will make a difference," she said.

"It is also important for the soldiers out in Iraq to know that we are all behind them and their regiment."

The Ministry of Defence is planning to merge the Dukes with the Green Howards and the Prince of Wales's Own to form a Yorkshire Regiment.

However, infantry regiments need to be cut from 40 to 36 and the Army Review Board is looking to axe one of the three Yorkshire regiments completely.

The march starts at 11.15am outside Halifax Town Hall.

The gathered crowds will then set off to the Piece Hall where Sir Evelyn will make his speech.

The Army Review Board will meet on November 18 to decide which of the three Yorkshire regiments will go.
