IT WAS another successful day for a highly decorated junior school choir as the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival neared its finale.
Lindley Junior School scooped two prizes at the event yesterday and came runner-up in a third category.
The school has a proud record of choral triumphs, including victory in the prestigious BBC Songs of Praise School Choirs of the Year contest in 2008. And, its young vocalists swept the board at last year’s prestigious Mrs Sunderland festival.
The school’s successes yesterday came in the Young People’s Choir section, for pupils in year 8 and below, and the category for junior school choirs singing hymns or sacred songs.
It narrowly missed out to Wakefield’s Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in the Junior School Choir section for year six and under.
But musical director Alison Watkins, who has seen the school’s musical tradition go from strength to strength in the last 13 years, said the children from Lindley had much to be proud of, considering the extremely high standard of competition.
She said: “It’s a tremendous success, especially because we lost 32 from the choir last year and for 40 of the children involved, this is the first experience they have had of competition.
“We have got history behind us, but there are never any guarantees and they have all worked really hard again.
“The standard I have seen here this year has been higher than anywhere else I have been, even the Songs of Praise contest, so I’m very proud of them.
“The hard work and enthusiasm of the children has been marvellous.”
Lindley’s winning pieces of music included Stars, Flying Free, Psalm 150 and Song of Peace.
