YOUNG musicians were back on stage in the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival – hours after the event was halted by a security alert.

Parents and young singers filled the Concert Hall at the Town Hall for yesterday’s classes.

It was the day of the choirs and organisers were delighted that some 200 people turned up to listen to the performances from the juniors’ and young people’s choirs.

Chairman Michael Hampshire said: “We have put Thursday behind us and carried on as normal. We have had a very good audience of about 200, many of whom have stayed on to listen to other choirs.

“There has been a lovely atmosphere in the Concert Hall.”

One class introduced for the first time this year was the novice choir. Due to the half term holiday, only Huddersfield Boys’ Choir took part, but they gave a very good and enthusiastic rendition of Chariots Coming and In the Jungle, despite the distractions.

“When I’m on stage I am thinking about not looking at my mum,” said Robbie Barr, 10, of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Brighouse. “She keeps waving at me and it puts me off a lot.”

Huddersfield Boys Choir was formed about two years ago and is based at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School.

Choral Director Keith Roberts said: “We try and choose songs the boys like singing and those who come to the choir have a great time.

“They are very, very chuffed to have won a big trophy and they will all be having their photos taken with it later on.”

Other schools to win junior choir classes were Lindley and QEGS juniors, of Wakefield.
