A LANDOWNER is delighted with the response to his plans for a nature reserve with facilities for disabled people.

Steve Sellars is aiming to create the site at Birdsedge.

He has installed special two-way gates for wheel- chair users as the first stage.

Wellwishers have promised cash and physical help since the plans were revealed in September.

Mr Sellars said: "I did not realise how much I was taking on, physically and financially.

"But all these wonderful offers of help have given me a heartening lift and made me even more determined to persevere and finish the project."

Landscape architect Mr Sellars, who lives in Holmfirth, decided to use 12 acres of his own land off Birdsedge Lane after a visit from his father, who uses a wheelchair.

He realised there was nowhere to take him to enjoy the countryside.

Mr Sellars said many firms and individuals had offered help.

One couple are giving cash for a viewing platform and a firm has agreed to pay for hedgerow planting.

The hope is for two fishing lakes, stables with disabled facilities, surfacing of woodland and lakeside paths for wheelchair use, a wildlife haven and a traditional, wild flower hay meadow.
