A MOTHER has criticised pool supervisors after her six-year-old son was not allowed to go swimming without an adult.

Sam Kelly, of Inglewood Terrace, said her son Jamie was a competent swimmer and should be allowed to go to Colne Valley Leisure Centre with his 10-year-old sister Dannii and 13-year-old cousin Jack.

Mrs Kelly is angry because she says Jamie has been going to the fun swim session with the group for the past three months unaccompanied and was only challenged recently about his age.

"He has been going to swimming lessons since he was three. I drop them off and pick them up and only live a couple of minutes away. They all have mobiles," said Mrs Kelly.

She said it was important to give children independence and the policy had not been made clear.

A spokeswoman from Kirklees Active Leisure which runs Colne Valley Leisure Centre said all KAL swimming pools followed Institute of Sports and Recreation Management guidelines.

She said children aged 10 and above who could swim could go into a pool unaccompanied.

Children between the ages of four and nine should be accompanied in the pool by an adult.
