A MOTHER and son involved with the Scouts are both gearing up for two separate adventures.

And both will be hard at work raising funds this weekend.

Sandra Drake, of Berry Brow, a leader of the 6th Home Valley Scout group, is off to Nepal in November to help build a school for villagers.

And son Ryan, 16, is going to Iceland in July to take part in adventure activities.

Both will be in attendance tomorrow at Honley Scout Hut in Moorbottom Road where Scouts will be washing cars, providing refreshments and even sitting in gunge baths.

Mrs Drake said: “We have already done backpacking and clairvoyant evenings to raise money, so we thought we would try something new.

“The Nepal trip is part of the Community Action Nepal scheme, which builds schools and helps the health situation of the villagers.

“We will have 33 adults from West Yorkshire Scouts there for a total of three weeks.”

Ryan’s trip is with the West Yorkshire Explorer Scouts, and will include a range of exciting activities in conditions most would not had experienced before.

“There will be glacier walks, ice climbing, dog sledging and mountain hiking, while they will also visit the geysers,” said Mrs Drake.

“I have been involved in Scouts for 14 years, and became a leader at Honley nine years ago.

“My eldest son Jason, now 20, was involved in the Scouts and that is how I got started.

“The outdoor activities have become my hobby, and its the same with Ryan, who enjoys them a lot.”

Ryan is just taking his GCSE exams at Honley High School and plans to start studies at Huddersfield New College in September.

Mrs Drake appealed for anyone willing to help with the fundraising efforts to contact her on 01484 361528.
