A HOMELESS man appeared in court yesterday charged with the attempted murder of a pensioner.

Owen McCann, 39, is accused of the attempted murder of widower Beaumont Lodge at his Clayton West home in March.

McCann is also charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and aggravated burglary.

Recorder of Bradford Judge Stephen Gullick remanded McCann to appear for trial on August 10.

Mr Lodge, 82, is still in hospital more than three months after the alleged attack.

He is in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and is said to be “stable but improving”.

Mr Lodge, a widower and father of four, lives in The Royds.

He is a regular lay preacher at churches in the Denby Dale area.
