A MURDER inquiry was underway on Friday after a man was shot dead in Huddersfield.

Another man is in hospital after the shooting on Brook Street in Thornton Lodge at 3.50am today.

His injuries are said not to be life-threatening, but police are not naming the hospital at this stage as no arrests have been made so far.

The dead man has not been named.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police were called early today to reports of shots being fired on Brook Street.

"A 28-year-old man was subsequently taken to hospital with injuries that proved fatal.

"A 26-year-old man was also taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening."

The spokesman revealed that a black Audi Q7 was recovered in Newsome.

"This vehicle is believed to be connected to the incident,’’ he said. "The investigation is at an early stage and the full circumstances have yet to be established, but it is believed this was a targeted attack."

Neighbourhood Policing Team officers were patrolling the area this morning providing reassurance to shocked residents.

The investigation is being carried out by detectives from West Yorkshire Homicide and Major Enquiry Team.
