A MURDER probe is under way in Huddersfield after a woman's body was found in a house.

An ambulance crew alerted police after they were called to the house on a back street in Milnsbridge just before 11pm last night.

They told officers that a woman had died.

Police sealed off the area around the house in Hope Street and senior detectives along with forensic experts were called to the scene.

An investigation was launched and a 48-year-old man was arrested.

He was held on suspicion of murder and was being questioned by detectives at Huddersfield police headquarters today.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that a 42-year-old woman had been found dead inside the terraced house, which is on a short unmade street between Armitage Road and Bankhouse Road.

A police car blocked off all access to the row of houses this morning.

The Huddersfield to Manchester railway line runs past the house on an embankment at the top of the street.

A post-mortem examination was being held today to find out how the woman died.

She has not yet been named by police.

Det Insp Steve Hepplestone, of Huddersfield CID, said: "The woman's body was found late last night and so the inquiry is clearly still at an early stage this morning.

"We are making house-to-house inquiries in the area as part of the investigation."

Neighbour, 57-year-old Anne McCready, said the news of the death had shocked the residents.

"I'm still feeling it now. I know these things go on but two doors down the road is very close.

"It's a dreadful thing to happen. I never heard anything going on."

She said a man had been living at the house for some months.

She believed he was visited by a girlfriend.

"As far as I know he was on his own with a lady visiting.

"I really don't know much about the couple. I just knew him to say: `Good morning' to."

The first she knew of the tragedy was the arrival of a police car last night.

"I looked out of the window because there was so much traffic all of a sudden. I saw the ambulance and police cars."
