MYSTERY surrounds the suspension of two stewards at a popular social club.

The steward and stewardess at Lindley Liberal Club, John and Debbie Nightingale, have been suspended pending an internal investigation.

Members of the club at Occupation Road were informed of the decision by a notice attached to the front door of the club.

The notice reads: “Due to unforeseen circumstances the steward and stewardess have been suspended, effective from Friday 16th May 2008 pending further investigations.”

It is signed by the secretary of the club, Ann Beaumont, on behalf of the committee.

When contacted by the Examiner, Mr Nightingale and secretary Ann Beaumont would not comment on the notice.

The president of the club, Geoff Hirst, also said he would not be making a comment on the internal investigation at the moment.

It is understood the couple have been allowed to remain living at accommodation in the club, but are not allowed into the licensed area.

The club has more than 2,000 members and has been in existence since 1887.

It is situated in the centre of Lindley and is used by members and community groups, including the Huddersfield Chess Club.
