A mystery crater has appeared in Huddersfield town centre

A busy area of Huddersfield town centre was sealed off after a mystery crater emerged in the road.

Council structural engineers were called in early yesterday evening when a gaping hole appeared in Queen Street.

They were assessing the damage this morning but as of yet it is unclear what caused the collapse.

Police closed the road at around 5pm and council workers were called to temporarily cover the hole. Police cordons were erected to prevent traffic from entering the street and nearby Cross Church Street.

Police maintained a presence there to ensure the safety of revellers throughout the evening. The area was still open to pedestrians and it was business as usual for the neighbouring bars, Tokyo nightclub and Lawrence Batley Theatre.

Lisa Harley, a town centre neighbourhood policing team officer said: “It’s a bit of a mystery, but then it did happen on Friday the 13th!

“We will have no idea of the extent of the damage or what’s underneath that could be causing it until structural engineers look at it.”
