A LUCKY gambler in Huddersfield is celebrating a near £16,000 win - on a £1 bet.

The mystery man scooped the cash playing stud poker at Huddersfield's Grosvenor Casino.

And it has emerged it was only his second-ever visit to the casino.

He was with friends when he scooped £15,977.79 from a £1 bet.

The winner, who does not wish to be named, was playing the Super Stud Poker game, which is electronically linked to other Grosvenor Casinos around the country.

And his winning hand came when he got a `Straight Flush' and hit the 10% jackpot.

The mystery winner plans to share his fortune with two of his friends.

He said: "I just couldn't believe it when they told me I'd won over £15,000.

"I've only played the game a couple of times before. It's just amazing.

"I can't describe how I felt. Shocked I suppose! I'm off on holiday next week so this money will definitely come in handy."

Super Stud Poker is played alongside the traditional Casino Stud Poker.

Already well over £10m has been paid out in prize money by Grosvenor Casinos since the game began in 2003.

Customers can win a 10% jackpot with a `Straight Flush' - five consecutive cards of the same suit - and 100% jackpot with a Royal Flush - the 10, J, K, Q and A of the same suit.

Mary O'Connor, general manager at the casino, said: "The gentleman was stunned when he realised he'd won. He had no idea how much until the dealer told him. He was over the moon!"

The win was the second 10% winner Grosvenor Casino Folly Hall has had this year. Another mystery winner walked away with over £20,000 back in March.
