ENGINEERS are still investigating a mysterious crater in the middle of a busy Huddersfield road.

The gaping hole appeared in Queen Street last week.

The area has been cordoned off to traffic while Kirklees Council investigates.

A council spokeswoman said Kirklees was still trying to get to the bottom of the mystery.

She said: "The cause of the road collapse is still being investigated but the Highways Service will be able to start filling the hole at the beginning of next week."

Queen Street is still open to pedestrians. Nearby businesses, including the Lawrence Batley Theatre and Tokyo nightclub, are open as usual.

The hole appeared around 5pm on Friday, March 13.

Council workers provided a temporary cover while police closed the road to traffic and stayed at the scene to ensure the safety of late-night revellers.
