A PERSON was seen trapped and yelling for help in a burning building.

The person, believed to be a woman, was seen through a smashed window at the former Manor Croft Youth Club on Highgate Road in Dewsbury at 8pm last night.

She was then seen on the roof while firefighters were on their way.

Station Officer David Price, of Dewsbury fire station, said: "We carried out an extensive search of the building, but found no-one.

"The person people had seen must have somehow escaped and was very lucky to do so. It looks like whoever was in there had smashed a window to try to get out.

"We confined the fire to two rooms in the upstairs, but the rest of the rambling old building was smoke-damaged."

He added: "It is an old two-storey building that used to be a big imposing manor house before it became a youth club.

"No-one has lived in it for years, but it looks as though it has been used as a squat and someone has been sleeping in there."
