A teenager, who robbed an Almondbury bookmakers after striking the counter glass with a hammer, has been given a two-year detention and training order.

Nathan Pimm, 17, went in to Jack Pearson’s premises in Town End around 7.30pm on April 22 wearing a motorcycle helmet with the visor down to hide his face.

He approached the counter and struck the glass telling the cashier “Give me the money”, Stuart Young prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court.

The female relief manager, in fear at his actions, threw money at him which Pimm gathered up before leaving the premises and riding off on his motor cycle.

Mr Young said the police were informed and the West Yorkshire Police force helicopter was called in and managed to locate Pimm from overhead.

In an attempt to evade capture he then abandoned the bike, hid the £2,700 he had stolen and got away, returning later for the cash.

But he was arrested later that evening at his girlfriend’s home having been traced through the motor bike.

He told police he had been at the bookies earlier that day and had won £100 on their fruit machine and had committed the offence after being threatened by a drug dealer. The court heard he had a previous conviction for robbery on his record in 2011.

Pimm, of De Lacy Avenue, Almondbury admitted robbery and Recorder Henry Prosser lifted a reporting restriction so he could be identified.

He told the teenager on any view the robbery was a serious offence which must have caused “absolute terror” to the unfortunate woman involved.

Adam Birkby representing Pimm told the court he wanted to apologise to the lady concerned for his actions.
