AN elderly man was helped to safety by his neighbour who spotted smoke coming from his flat.

The man had put the chip pan on at his Norcross Avenue flat and then fallen asleep.

His neighbour spotted the fire and woke him up and led him to safety.

Huddersfield firefighters were called and Crew Commander Steve Mosley said: “The neighbour saved the day.

“The man was going to try and sort it himself but she led him to safety and called us, which is the correct thing to do.”

The incident happened at 5pm at the Oakes ground floor flat.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the kitchen to put the fire out.

They were able to contain the damage to the kitchen and prevent the fire from spreading.

Firefighter Mosley added: “We’ll be going back again today to fit smoke alarms at neighbours houses and give fire safety advice.”
