A MURDER inquiry is under way after the body of a man was found at a house in a Huddersfield village.

Detectives were alerted after the body was discovered at the home in Skelmanthorpe in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The probe is being headed by Det Supt Tim Forber from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide And Major Enquiry Team.

The drama unfolded after police were called to the house on Lidgett Lane at 5.20am where they made the grim discovery.

The dead man is aged 65.

A man aged 24 was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police sealed off the village street while forensic teams carried out a full and in-depth investigation at the scene.

Lidgett Lane is just off the main Huddersfield Road which runs from Shelley into Skelmanthorpe.

Insp Adrian Lyles, from West Yorkshire Police, said: "The body of the male was found in the house.

"Inquiries are ongoing and a forensic post-mortem is due to take place. A 24-year-old male has been arrested and remains in police custody."

Police are yet to reveal the name of the dead man.

Neighbours spoke of their shock at what had happened on their quiet village street.

Neighbour Clarence Johnson said: "He was a very nice chap and a very sociable person. He loved motors and had a home in Spain.

"He was someone we would say ‘hi’ to.

"He was well-liked in the community and got on with everybody.

"He wouldn’t be aggressive and he would try to calm things down."

Neighbour Richard Darks added: "It surprises you. You don’t think it will happen on your doorstep."
