BATLEY and Spen Liberal Democrats have chosen solicitor Neil Bentley as their prospective parliamentary candidate.

Mr Bentley, 30, was born and brought up in Batley, and now lives in Gomersal with his wife, Joanne.

In the last general election, he polled 5,300 votes as the Liberal Democrat candidate in Huddersfield.

Now selected as prospective candidate in his home constituency, he said: "We have just seen massive swings from Labour to the Lib Dems in the Leicester and Birmingham by-elections.

"There is no reason why that can't be repeated here. It is all to play for in Batley and Spen."

Since 1997, he has been a school governor at Lydgate Junior and Infant School in Batley, where he is vice-chairman.
