A MUM and daughter team are making a big splash for charity.
Alison and Laura Proud, whose family run Holme Valley News shops in Netherton and Honley, are to swim the English Channel.
To be more accurate, they are swimming the 21-mile equivalent of the Channel – in the pool at Huddersfield Sports Centre.
Alison, 50, and Laura, 23, hope to raise hundreds of pounds for the Mayor of Kirklees’ Appeal for the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust.
Alison, who lives in Netherton, said she hadn’t swum in more than 20 years and Laura was also a stranger to the water.
“We just decided that this was a great cause which we thought we could help so we’ve jumped in at the deep end so to speak,” said Alison.
“Also I have recently turned 50 and thought I needed some regular exercise.
“This way the more people know about it the less chance there is of me letting it slip.”
The Channel Swim Challenge means swimming 1,433 lengths of the 25m Huddersfield pool before the end of May.
“We have given ourselves six months so we have plenty of time,” said Alison.
