A TEENAGER stole his friend’s car after drinking and smashed it into a neighbour’s porch, a court heard.

Jordan Garside, of Elder Grove, Netherton, admitted aggravated vehicle taking when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

The 18-year-old also admitted drink-driving and driving without a licence and insurance.

Marina Hunter-Grey, prosecuting, said the Renault Clio belonged a female friend of Garside’s who had parked it outside his home. She then hung up her car keys in the kitchen and caught a taxi with friends to go out for drinks.

But at 6.30am a neighbour at Elder Grove heard a loud noise coming from outside as Garside drunkenly tried to move it.

Ms Hunter-Grey said: “As she looked out she saw the car being reversed on a grass verge, knocking a road sign down.”

The Huddersfield bench was told that at 7.40am another neighbour saw the car being driven by Garside.

Ms Hunter-Grey said: “She heard a bang and saw a car collide with her Citroën Picasso. Then she saw the Clio drive into the porch of number 30 and then Garside go into number 35.”

The neighbour called police who had to force their way into Garside’s home after he failed to respond to their knocking.

Tests revealed he had 48 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Garside accepted taking his friend’s car and smashing it into his neighbour’s property. He told police he was ‘smashed’ after downing 10 pints.

Paul Blanchard, for Garside, described his client’s actions as ‘foolish’ and said that he had shown remorse.

Magistrates gave Garside a 12-month community order, an eight-week 9pm to 6am curfew, banned him from driving for 16 months and ordered him to pay £85 court costs.
