AN end is in sight for parking misery at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
Health chiefs have submitted plans to Kirklees Council for more than 600 extra spaces close to the hospital.
They want to use part of the sprawling Acre Mills site, across the road from the Infirmary.
It should mean an end to the sight of patients and visitors having to cruise around the hospital car parks looking for a space.
Officials hope the car parks could be in use within months.
The proposals seek to provide temporary car parking arrangements for the Lindley hospital with 608 spaces across two car parking areas.
A spokesman for the agents working for the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust said it was a positive move.
"This will ease the existing situation on the main hospital site where through either the misuse of car spaces or unauthorised parking, operational difficulties regularly arise on site and within the local area.
"Car parking arrangements for existing outpatients and visitors can also be problematic and can lead to delays and congestion on the access routes into the site.
"This situation has been documented previously in information provided by the Calderdale and Huddersfield Trust to Kirklees Council in support of recent planning approvals on this site.
"The provision of this temporary car park is to address an existing on-going problem and will allow the Trust to more effectively manage parking within its existing site and to ensure that critical hospital access arrangements are not compromised.’’
The parking plan is for three years.
Eventually, hospital bosses want to develop a permanent multi-storey car park along with medical and support services on the Acre Mills site.
Access roads to the new car parking sites will be provided off Acre Street and School Street West.
There will be two separate parking areas on the Acre Mills complex and barriers will be in place to ensure the site is used only by people visiting the hospital.
It is not clear what the parking charges will be for the site, but they are expected to be in line with the charges already in use on the Infirmary site.
