NEW allotments have been created in Kirkburton.

And it means 21 more local families can now join Kirklees Council’s Plant it, Grow it, Eat It campaign.

The plots have been opened in Queensway, which means Kirkburton is the latest area to benefit from the three-year capital works plan to improve allotment provision throughout Kirklees.

The new Queensway allotments, situated next to the Health Centre, have been funded by the £1m three-year improvement programme for Kirklees allotments.

The land, which was previously used for grazing by a local farmer, has been released from the Kirklees Housing Services stock and allocated for allotment use.

Prospective new allotment holders and their families have now been able to see the site and choose their new plots.

As they signed up for their allocated plot, they were issued with starter and information packs to help them on their way.

To raise awareness of the health benefits of growing your own food, the NHS has joined Kirklees Council to fund the campaign.
