MP Mary Creagh is urging war veterans to apply for a new badge which recognises their service.

The Wakefield MP, whose constituency includes Kirkburton and Denby Dale, is planning a presentation ceremony for people entitled to wear the Veteran Lapel Badge.

All men and women who served in the UK armed forces in the First and Second World Wars are eligible for the lapel badge.

Ms Creagh joined forces with Royal British Legion officials at Denby Dale's war memorial to make the call.

She urged people in her constituency who wanted one to contact her.

She said: "The Veteran Badge recognises the contribution that our ex- servicemen and women made during the wartime years. I encourage all local veterans to apply."

Other groups who served during the Second World War - such as Merchant Navy seamen, the Home Guard, Polish Forces under UK command and the Cyprus Regiment can also get it.

The badge can also be worn by war widows and widowers who receive a War Widows or Widowers Pension, veterans of the Suez Canal Zone 1951-54 and those who were on National Service in 1939-45.

Ms Creagh said constituents should ring her office on 01924 204 319 to inquire.

She will then contact the Ministry of Defence using their details and ask them to provide the Veteran Badge.
