TWO new benches are the latest addition to Clayton West's Millennium Green.

Volunteers who care for the haven made them from recycled wood.

One is at the green's entrance and the other in the middle, near a sculptured cow and timeline showing Clayton West's history.

Spokeswoman Linda Kavanagh said: "The timeline has very sadly suffered frost damage over last winter and work is currently under way to repair it."

The former farming site was transformed in a £40,000 makeover to mark the coming of the year 2000.

Mrs Kavanagh, secretary of the board of trustees, said volunteers were always needed to keep the land in good condition.

"With the weed problem now well and truly under control, the green is looking better than ever before," she said.

"The new planting which was done to mark the turn of the millennium is now well established and looking very healthy."

She appealed for villagers to attend the trust's annual meeting on October 13 at 8pm at Tilly's in High Street, Clayton West.

Mrs Kavanagh said the trustees worked hard to preserve the green for the villagers and would really welcome some support.
