A senior councillor has admitted that Kirklees bin collection “teething problems” are yet to be resolved.

Cabinet member, Clr Cathy Scott, revealed refuse workers had been paid more than £11,000 in overtime over the past few months after failing to manage the rounds within their normal working hours.

Clr Christine Iredale asked her what was being done as “everyone knows the new bin collection system isn’t working”.

Clr Scott said it had “settled” down in North Kirklees but confessed the south of the region, Huddersfield, the Holme and Colne valleys and the Denby Dale areas still had issues.

She said overtime payments had reduced in recent months, following the launch of the new rounds last September.

The councils bin lorries are now working a four-day week, Monday to Thursday, and many homes have had their green bin and grey bin collections changed.

There were also complaints when the crews took several days off over Christmas and the New Year.
