A NEW care home will be built next to a busy village road.

Councillors yesterday approved the plan for the Green Acres site on Huddersfield Road in Meltham.

The old care home will be demolished and replaced with a new building which will house 64 patients.

Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee unanimously supported the plan.

The new home is expected to open early next summer. It will employ 45 full-time and 11 part-time staff.

The care home will be two storeys high and made of stone with a slate roof. It will have 18 parking spaces.

Developer Orchard Care Homes has pledged to retain as many trees as possible.

Sub-committee member and Holme Valley North councillor David Woodhead was pleased about the development. He said: “I very much welcome this proposal because the site has been empty for getting on for two years.”

But Clr Woodhead asked the developer to make sure the new building was secure.

The Lib Dem said: “I understand that a high number of patients will be people with dementia.

“Given that the site is next to a main road which is 40mph, I’m a little bit worried about security.”
