A NEW children’s centre in Meltham opened its doors for the first time at the weekend.

The launch event of the Sure Start Children’s Centre took place on Saturday.

To mark the official opening, a ribbon was cut by the Elgie family, who were the first to register with the centre, along with Kirklees Cabinet member for Children’s Services, Clr Jim Dodds.

Clr Dodds said: “Children’s centres bring to the local community those services that are required by residents with young families and make available a variety of resources that would sometimes be difficult to access.”

During the launch, children were able to enjoy animal-themed activities including face painting, masks and puppets.

Many families also visited the annual Autumn Fair at Meltham Moor Primary School.
