A NEW exhibition by Huddersfield artist David Whiting is in the frame at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

The collection of paintings, called Looking Into The Water, is the result of two years of work by the Almondbury-based artist.

The artwork explores the vitality of life through water and were created as Mr Whiting became increasingly fascinated by the subject.

He said: “I had always been interested in painting scenes on rivers and canals, but the water had always been more in the background.

“Then the water took over and the paintings were based on what I saw when I looked at the surface.

“One of the series, called Red Reflections, arose when I was walking along the River Thames and saw the patterns created in the water by the red brick railway bridge at Maidenhead.

“Other images have come from all over the place, from Bretton Park to Denmark.

“I’m fascinated by the abstract shapes and colours produced on the surface of the water, the fluidity and sense of rhythm created by the water.”

Although Mr Whiting has exhibited before at the LBT with Huddersfield Art Society, this is his first solo effort there and he is hoping it will be well-received by art fans.

The former art teacher has been an active member of the society for six years and has exhibited his paintings at Huddersfield Art Gallery and Holmfirth Art Week.

Look into the Water is on display in the theatre’s foyer and runs until March 29.
