THE TITLE of ‘worst road in Huddersfield’ is becoming a hotly contested one.

Angry residents sent in their nominations to the Examiner after Dingle Road, Marsh, near Greenhead Park, was named a leading contender for the crown.

That road was given the go-ahead for repairs after a long campaign by residents and councillors.

But Rob Smith, 37, of Kirkheaton, is adamant that the road by his house is the worst in Huddersfield and would gladly swap with the residents at Dingle Road.

He said: “It’s a complete mess.

“It is a privately-owned road like the one at Greenhead, so the Council do have a duty of care towards it.

“It is usually that side of town that gets preferential treatment, so it doesn’t surprise me that their road was repaired first.”

Rob and wife Rachel, 34, have lived in their home alongside the dilapidated road for eleven years.

In that time no maintenance work has been carried out – causing numerous problems for the inhabitants of the 20 houses that use the stretch.

But the main problem they have is that the private road doesn’t even have a name!

Rob added: “There is a guy in his 80’s on a dialysis machine who lives on the road and obviously he needs medical attention quite often.

“At least once a week the ambulance services are late to attend to him because they simply cannot find our street.”

Rob did get in touch with the Council and a meeting was held at his home. Councillors Angela Ellam and Peter McBride attended the meeting and have informed residents that they are in the process of having the road assessed by highways and environment inspectors.

Sixty-six year old Kevin Burns from Longwood told us of his concerns over Quarmby Road which runs between Quarmby and Paddock.

He said several stretches were bad, especially the junction with Fir Road.

He said: “The road has so many potholes that it’s like an unfinished jigsaw!

“It has been patched up recently, but it hasn’t been resurfaced properly.

“This is another example of how the Council try fix our roads on the cheap – it isn’t good enough.”

Bernard Hall, of Salendine Nook, said: “Moor Hill Road must be one of the worst in Huddersfield.

“My wife has a bad back and she is in pain whenever we drive on it because of the bumps. New Hey Road is very bad too, especially by Wellington Mills.”

One further worry was raised about dips in the road at Greenside Crescent, Dalton.

This has caused the road to decay and the resulting debris to chip car-windscreens.

A council spokesman urged people to report road problems, especially potholes. He said the recent flood problems had made some roads worse.
