A £4.6m fund is set to create a safe cycling route linking Huddersfield, Brighouse and Halifax.

Councils have secured cash for a scheme to improve canal towpaths around Huddersfield and Calderdale.

The money, to be split across the two regions and Bradford, will be used to upgrade the narrow and bumpy towpaths to make them fit for safe cycling.

Sections earmarked for development include a stretch of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal between the town centre and Milnsbridge, and an extension of the path along the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Cooper Bridge, linking it with Brighouse.

Other routes set to be improve include the Rochdale Canal between Todmorden and Sowerby Bridge and the Leeds Liverpool Canal in the Steeton and Silsden areas.

The project is being managed by Calderdale Council on behalf of all three areas.

The multi-million pound scheme is thanks to funding from the Department for Transport, secured for the so-called Leeds City Region, which includes Kirklees.

Clr Barry Collins, Calderdale cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, said the project would provide high quality off-road routes for commuting and leisure.

He said: “By linking into existing facilities the proposals will create a safe, high quality cycle route between Halifax, Brighouse and Huddersfield.

“Details of the proposed works on the individual lengths are still being developed.

“Improvement works will be phased and are planned to take place between spring 2016 and spring 2018.”
