A HUDDERSFIELD school has its first ever head boy and girl.

And the move at Newsome High School and Sports College comes after the school decided to get smart by insisting its pupils wear blazers.

Headteacher Paul Gittins has introduced a senior student team including a head boy and head girl, their two deputies and four other senior students.

A new house system has also been introduced at the school.

The head girl is Katie Rowe, the head boy is Alex Allen and their deputies are James McDermott and Abi Hancox.

When Paul Gittins arrived as headteacher in 2007 he made it a priority to listen to the wishes of his student body.

Year council, school council and sports council were put in place and annual elections now take priority with potential candidates broadcasting to every classroom from the media centre via Newsome TV.

The election of the student leadership team across the school is significant in raising self-esteem, aspiration and supporting learning.

This group represents the school at key events and is involved in working with the staff at many levels.

Mr Gittins said: “I am delighted to have a significant group of students to supplement our current student voice who can represent the progress our school is making.

“Always positive, Paul Gittins continues to be inspired by students the school and the Newsome community.

“I feel I have found my spiritual home here. Being head at Newsome High School and Sports College makes me very happy. I am proud and it is a privilege to serve this community,” he said.

“I am very proud of all my staff and students.”
