A community music festival has been cancelled “due to poor ticket sales”.

Elland’s Inn-Ovation festival will no longer be held at Brooksbank School from July 31 to August 2.

But the group behind the event, Holywell Inn Action Group, has pledged to run a smaller-scale event called Holywell Community Festival on the same weekend at Elland Golf Club instead.

The Strawbs, who have had to pull out due to band member illness, The Poozies, Gabby Young and some others will no longer play but the new headliners will include others on the original line up including Brighouse’s Roger Davies and Dave Nachmanoff and Clive Greggs from the USA.

A total of 12 acts will now perform over three nights from 6.30 to 11pm, instead of the original 20 billed.

Talking about the decision, John Walsh, chair of the action group, said: “We cancelled it due to poor ticket sales– we have to be frank about it.

“But instead of not having an event we have re-arranged it .

“Brooksbank School were brilliant but we needed to hire a PA system, set up a bar etc which would have cost more whereas the golf club has this already set up.

“It will run for less time than the original but we’ve still got lots of acts on the bill, including those from abroad and great local musicians, who are all doing the festival for expenses.”

Since the recent change, John said that ticket sales, which are now available at £7.50 per night instead of £15 and £40, have improved.

He said: “We have 150 tickets now instead of 300 and they’re selling really well and each ticket includes a free supper.”

The event is being run to raise funds for the Holywell Inn pub on Stainland Road, which the group is trying to save and run as a community hub.
