A FORMER family centre will be demolished as part of the massive Tesco plan for Huddersfield town centre.

Councillors decided yesterday to knock down Southgate Family Centre on Old Leeds Road.

The £34,000 demolition will pave the way for a new computer centre on the site to replace the existing centre on Leeds Road.

That building will be handed over to Tesco in 2010 and demolished as part of the supermarket giant’s plan for a major new store.

Tesco wants to build a new store at Southgate, which would involve demolishing the computer centre, as well as Huddersfield Sports Centre and the Ibbotson and Lonsbrough flats.

The current Tesco at Viaduct Street would be flattened, allowing the firm to use the land for housing, offices, shops and a hotel.

A replacement sports centre would be created on the site of the Springwood car park.

Kirklees Council’s cabinet voted unanimously yesterday to demolish the Southgate Family Centre.

But Clr Ken Smith expressed his regret at the decision.

The Ashbrow Labour man said: “Although we have to do this, I’m terribly saddened.”
